Coco Gauff Shocks with Coaching Change Before US Open

American tennis player Coco Gauff, currently number 3 in the world and two-time Grand Slam champion, has made an unexpected decision by dismissing her coach, Matthew Daly, just days before the start of the US Open 2025. Gauff will continue working with her long-time coach, Jean-Christophe “J.C.” Faurel, and has added Gavin MacMillan, a biomechanics specialist, to her team. MacMillan was seen with Gauff during a practice session on Wednesday in New York, according to sources close to the tennis player. MacMillan previously collaborated with Aryna Sabalenka, world number 1, who has acknowledged his help in improving her serve and forehand. Gauff has experienced problems with her serve this summer, including 42 double faults in her three matches at the Canadian Open earlier this month.

I only have good things to say about Coco, I enjoyed working with her.

Daly has not yet issued official comments, but informed tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg that his dismissal occurred “recently.” Daly referred Gauff for a formal announcement. Until Wednesday afternoon, Gauff had not made any statement about the changes in her team. Gauff hired Daly last year after splitting with Brad Gilbert, following a disappointing result at the US Open. Along with Faurel, Daly worked with Gauff before the China Open, focusing on modifying her serve grip, among other technical and tactical details. Gauff won the China Open and finished the season as the WTA Finals champion. This season, with Daly and Faurel as coaches, Gauff won the French Open title and reached the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, both 1000-level events. Due, in part, to her occasional service problems, she has only won four singles matches in four events since her triumph in Paris. The US Open main draw begins on Sunday in New York. Gauff, the 2023 champion, is expected to play for the first time in an exhibition event on Thursday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
