Coco Gauff Advances to China Open Semifinals

The current champion, Coco Gauff, secured her place in the China Open semifinals for the third consecutive year after defeating Eva Lys with a score of 6-3, 6-4 this Thursday. Gauff, seeded number two, faced challenges with her serve, conceding seven break opportunities. However, Lys, a German player seeking her first WTA title, only managed to convert three of them. The French Open champion broke her opponent’s serve on five occasions.

“She’s a tough opponent. She hit incredible shots on the move,” commented Gauff, who is seeking her eleventh career title. “I was trying to be as aggressive as possible. Staying safe in my game and not being too passive”.

In the next phase, Gauff will face Amanda Anisimova, the third seed and runner-up at Wimbledon and the US Open. Anisimova achieved a comeback to defeat Jasmine Paolini with scores of 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes. This victory secures Anisimova’s participation in the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, next month, this being her first time. In the decisive set, Anisimova overcame a critical moment at 4-3, 40-15 down on her serve, managing to hold it. Finally, she closed out the match against Paolini, who recently contributed to Italy retaining the Billie Jean King Cup. This was only the second encounter between both players, four years after Anisimova defeated Paolini in straight sets in Palermo, Italy.
