Medvedev Stars in a Dramatic Encounter at the US Open
Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev experienced a match full of emotions and controversies at the US Open, which included an unusual interruption and a radical change in the development of the game. The meeting, which extended until the early hours of Monday, was marked by an incident in which a photographer entered the court at a crucial moment of the match, right at match point. This situation generated Medvedev’s fury, especially due to the chair umpire’s decision to award his opponent, Benjamin Bonzi, a first serve. Medvedev, who came close to elimination, managed to win the next two sets, thus forcing a decisive fifth set. However, Bonzi finally prevailed in the final set, with a score of 6-4. The drama began in the third set, with Bonzi leading 4-3. After missing his first serve, a photographer left his position before the Frenchman could execute his second serve. The chair umpire, Greg Allensworth, instructed the photographer to leave the court and announced that Bonzi would get another first serve due to the interruption, a common practice in tennis. Medvedev strongly protested the decision, even addressing the public with sarcastic comments. This behavior recalled a 2019 incident on the same court, where Medvedev was booed for his actions. On that occasion, Medvedev had snatched a towel from a ball boy and then threw his racket in the direction of the chair umpire. A spokesperson for the United States Tennis Association reported that the photographer was escorted off the court by security and his accreditation was revoked. He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like being here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour.
