Ben Shelton advances steadily in the US Open

American tennis player Ben Shelton demonstrated his good form by securing a convincing victory over Ignacio Buse in the first round of the US Open. Shelton, with a solid performance, won with scores of 6-3, 6-2, and 6-4. For the second year in a row, Shelton had the honor of playing the opening match of the tournament at Arthur Ashe Stadium, recalling his victory last year against Dominic Thiem. “It’s starting to feel like home for me. This is the best tennis court, my favorite place to play, my favorite tournament,” Shelton commented during the on-court interview. Shelton, 22, arrives at this US Open after winning his first Masters 1000 title in Toronto, becoming the first American to achieve this since Andy Roddick in 2003. During his successful participation in Toronto, Shelton overcame three tiebreaks in decisive sets, the most for a Masters 1000 champion. In his Sunday match, Shelton had a calmer match against Buse, saving the five break points he faced, despite recording only five aces, his lowest amount in a Grand Slam tournament win. Since the beginning of 2024, Shelton has accumulated an impressive 21-0 record against non-seeded opponents in Grand Slam tournaments, surpassed only by Jannik Sinner, who has 22-0 in the same period. Shelton will have two days of rest before his second-round match on Wednesday, where he will face the winner of the match between Pablo Carreño Busta and Pablo Llamas Ruiz.

In other notable results of the day, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, seeded number 18, defeated Alexander Shevchenko with a score of 6-1, 6-1, and 6-2. Jakub Mensik, seeded number 16, overcame Nicolas Jarry with partial scores of 7-6 (5), 6-3, and 6-4.
