Arthur Fils Withdraws from Roland Garros Due to Injury and Could Miss Wimbledon

PARIS – Tennis player Arthur Fils was forced to withdraw from the French Open due to a stress fracture in his lower back. This injury could keep him off the courts for at least a month, putting his participation in Wimbledon at risk, he explained at a press conference on Saturday.

Fils, who was the last French representative in the tournament, announced his withdrawal on Friday without specifying the severity of the injury. The decision to withdraw was made in conjunction with his team to avoid further complications.

“We decided with the team that it was better to stop now, because if I stop now, I could be out for only four to six weeks,” Fils, 20, commented on Saturday. “If I had pushed myself too hard, I would probably be out for a couple of months… I had to make a decision.”

With Fils’ withdrawal, Andrey Rublev, seeded number 17, advanced directly to the fourth round. Fils had been dealing with back pain for a while, and the situation worsened during his five-set victory over Jaume Munar on Thursday.

“I gave it my all. I couldn’t give more,” Fils said on Saturday. “At the end of the second set, I felt that my back was not good at all.”

The tennis player stated that he doesn’t believe he needs surgery. Fils is aware that he will have to miss some tournaments, but hopes to be able to compete at Wimbledon, the next Grand Slam tournament, which begins on June 30.
