Alcaraz’s New Haircut: A Debate at the US Open

One of the most talked-about news stories of the second day of the US Open came from off the courts. Carlos Alcaraz surprised everyone with a new haircut before his first match, and the reactions were immediate. Alcaraz, known for his characteristic hairstyle, appeared on Monday on the practice courts with a buzz cut, leaving behind his usual mane. The makeover quickly went viral, capturing the attention of figures like golfer Rory McIlroy, who didn’t hesitate to touch Alcaraz’s head to feel the new haircut.

“I just got a haircut that I wasn’t happy with,” Alcaraz explained to McIlroy. “I had to start again.”

McIlroy, for his part, praised the new look, describing it as “good.” However, the opinion of Frances Tiafoe, American tennis star and close friend of Alcaraz, was different. Tiafoe, after winning his first-round match against Yoshihito Nishioka, approached Alcaraz and, visibly surprised, called the haircut “horrible”.

“It’s terrible. It’s definitely terrible. But it’s my guy,” Tiafoe joked. “It’s funny, I looked at him and thought, ‘I guess you’re aerodynamic now.’”

“I don’t know who told him to do that, but it’s terrible. From someone who cuts his hair week in and week out and prides himself on good haircuts, it’s horrendous,” added Tiafoe. “But at the end of the day, it’s Carlos, and he’s my guy. But yeah, he needs to come with me. He needs to come with me for sure.” Alcaraz, seeded number 2, faced Reilly Opelka in the first round on Monday. If Tiafoe’s assessment is correct, Alcaraz could be faster than ever on the court.
