Vojvoda fired from Santos after defeat: Neymar suffers in the standings

2 Min Read
Juan Pablo Vojvoda was dismissed as Santos coach after the 2-1 defeat against Internacional on Wednesday. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona forward, Neymar, scored the equalizing goal for Santos after an initial own goal, but a goal in added time by Johan Carbonero left Santos with only one point above the relegation zone. The news of Vojvoda’s dismissal arrived almost immediately after the match; the Argentine didn’t even have time to attend the post-match press conference. Vojvoda leaves Santos in a precarious situation. Internacional’s victory was the first in the Brazilian Serie A this season, and means that Santos is now only one point above them, and the relegation zone, after seven games played.

Vojvoda replaced Cleber Xavier as Santos’ coach last August, with the club two points above the relegation zone, and oversaw a slight improvement in results that ended with the team finishing in 12th place. But Santos has had problems again this season, having won four and lost six of their 15 matches played in all competitions. The last five matches have seen only one victory and elimination from the Campeonato Paulista at the hands of Novorizontino, a second division team. Santos hasn’t announced Vojvoda’s successor yet.
