VAR: Weekly Controversy in the Premier League and its Key Decisions
Every weekend, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) generates debate in the Premier League. We analyze the most outstanding incidents, examining the decision-making process and its validity, based on the VAR protocol and the Laws of the Game.
In this edition, we will explore the most controversial decisions.
West Ham United vs. Nottingham Forest: Why the Delay?
The match between West Ham United and Nottingham Forest witnessed one of the longest VAR reviews of the season. Milenkovic’s goal, which put the score at 1-2 in favor of Forest, took more than six minutes to be confirmed. The reason? The semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) was affected by the proximity of the players, forcing VAR to resort to manual lines.

This delay, the longest in the Premier League, surpassed even the time taken to disallow a goal for Bournemouth against Wolverhampton in the FA Cup. Furthermore, a problem with the referee’s earpiece further complicated the situation.
Subsequent analysis revealed that Forest player Domínguez might have been in an offside position, but he did not impact any West Ham player, so the goal was validated.
Chelsea vs. Manchester United: Penalty Not Awarded and Decision Revoked
The match between Chelsea and Manchester United was also marked by controversial decisions. Chelsea claimed a penalty for a handball by Højlund, but the referee did not award it. The VAR review confirmed the decision, arguing that the player’s arm was not in an unnatural position.

In addition, a penalty in favor of Chelsea was disallowed after VAR review, determining that Onana touched the ball before contacting George.
Arsenal vs. Newcastle: Red Card Avoided?
In the Arsenal vs. Newcastle match, VAR reviewed a possible red card for a foul by Krafth on Martinelli. Finally, it was decided that the yellow card was the appropriate sanction, as the play was not considered a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

Brentford vs. Fulham: Penalty Awarded and Retake Dismissed
In the match between Brentford and Fulham, a penalty was awarded to Brentford for a foul by Andersen on Schade. Although the penalty was missed, there was a VAR review for possible encroachment by Andersen, but a retake was not ordered.

VAR continues to be a topic of debate in the Premier League, with decisions often generating controversy and requiring a thorough analysis of the rules and protocol.
