Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool’s Defensive Fortress and Best Center-Back in the World
Virgil van Dijk has been recognized as the best center-back in the world in the ninth annual edition of the FC 100. At 33 years old, the Liverpool player continues to demonstrate why he is considered an undisputed leader in the defensive line.
Since his arrival at Liverpool in January 2018, coming from Southampton, Van Dijk quickly became a key figure in the team. Jürgen Klopp, in his last season as coach, gave him the captaincy, solidifying his status as a leader.
“I haven’t worked with a player like him in terms of leadership,” commented Arne Slot, current Liverpool coach. “It’s the energy he brings to the team in every training session and his professionalism influences his teammates, especially the younger ones.”

After overcoming the injuries that affected his performance, Van Dijk has shown an impressive recovery. His anticipation and ability to read the game allow him to stand out in every match.
In the past season, only Everton’s James Tarkowski won a higher percentage of aerial duels than Van Dijk. Furthermore, his effectiveness in ground play positions him among the best in the Premier League.

Klopp’s tactical shift to Slot hasn’t affected Van Dijk’s performance. Slot values the defender’s ability with the ball, highlighting his precision in long passes and his skill in building the game from defense.
Van Dijk led the Premier League in pass accuracy (91.7%) last season, demonstrating his influence in playmaking from the back.
Despite the pressure in important matches, Van Dijk maintains calm and composure with the ball, showing sound decision-making and a willingness to make risky passes. At 33 years old, Van Dijk shows no signs of decline, solidifying his position as a key and irreplaceable player at Liverpool.
