Spain Dethrones United States in FIFA Women’s Ranking

The United States women’s national soccer team has lost the top spot in the FIFA world ranking, ceding the lead to Spain, the current world champion. Spain regains the position of honor despite having lost against England in the final of the European Championship last month. The United States had held the top spot since August of last year, after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Spain had already led the ranking from December 2023 to June of last year, after their triumph at the World Cup. The governing body of world football, FIFA, released the latest rankings on Thursday.
Spain reached the final of Euro 2025, but suffered a defeat in the penalty shootout against England.England, which has won two consecutive European Championships and lost against Spain in the 2023 World Cup final, moved up one place and now occupies fourth place. Brazil dropped three positions and is in seventh place, despite successfully defending the Copa América and winning its ninth continental title.Sweden and France experienced significant rises following their outstanding performances in the European Championship. Sweden moved up three places and is now third, after being eliminated by England in the quarter-finals via penalty kicks. France moved up four places to sixth place, after also losing in the quarter-finals.
