Pulisic misses penalty, halts Milan’s streak against Juventus in Serie A

Christian Pulisic, a key figure for AC Milan, had a bittersweet Sunday in Serie A. A penalty missed by the American proved crucial, as Milan drew 0-0 against Juventus, ending a streak of five consecutive victories. Pulisic, captain of the United States national team, leads Milan with six goals and two assists this season. However, his penalty attempt in the second half went over the crossbar.

This was only the second time in Pulisic’s professional career that he missed a penalty. His current record is 13 converted and two missed between clubs and national team. Milan dropped from first to third place, remaining two points behind Napoli and Roma, who won their respective matches. Napoli came back to beat Genoa 2-1, while Roma also achieved a 2-1 victory against Fiorentina. Juventus remained one point behind, in fifth place, before the international break. Weston McKennie, Pulisic’s teammate in the United States national team, wasted some opportunities for Juventus. There were few clear chances for both teams in a match where Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri returned to face the club he managed in two different spells, winning five Italian league titles.

Allegri was fired by Juventus after an incident in the 2024 Italian Cup final. The penalty was awarded when Santiago Gimenez was brought down by Lloyd Kelly. Milan was close to winning in the 90th minute with a pass from Luka Modric to Rafael Leão, but the Portuguese winger’s shot was stopped by Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio. Previously, Leão attempted a shot from the center of the field, but the ball did not find the goal.
