PSG Sanctioned for Fan Conduct in the Champions League Final

Nyon, Switzerland – Paris Saint-Germain, the newly crowned Champions League champion, has been fined almost €150,000 ($171,000) for the inappropriate conduct of its fans during the tournament final. The sanction was imposed by UEFA this Thursday. UEFA detailed that the Parisian club was found guilty of six charges, including “transmitting messages not suitable for a sporting event” and “damaging the reputation of UEFA”. PSG was crowned Champions League champion after defeating Inter Milan with a resounding 5-0 on May 31st at Bayern Munich’s stadium.

The largest economic sanction, of 100,000€ (115,000$), is due to the combination of field invasion by fans and the use of flares.

UEFA announced the disciplinary sanctions, including a fine of 10,000€ (11,500$) for the offensive message displayed by PSG supporters. PSG fans displayed a banner with the slogan “UEFA Mafia” and the image of a pig, despite the fact that the club’s president, Nasser al-Khelaifi, is a member of the UEFA executive committee. Al-Khelaifi was elected to the UEFA’s decision-making body representing the European Club Association, which he also chairs. The additional fine of 8,000€ ($9,160) was imposed for “acts of damage”. In addition, the ban on PSG selling tickets to its fans for an away match in a UEFA competition has been suspended for two years, with a probationary period. The PSG earned around 140 million euros (160 million dollars) in Champions League prize money last season.
