PSG Falls to Monaco in a Forgettable Match

The Paris Saint-Germain suffered its second defeat of the season in Ligue 1, losing 1-0 to AS Monaco on Saturday. This defeat, on matchday 14, equals the number of matches lost by the Parisian team in the entire last season. Japanese forward Takumi Minamino scored the only goal of the match, netting midway through the second half. PSG, displaying an unusually lackluster performance, couldn’t counter Monaco’s game.

It’s difficult to maintain consistency when you make individual mistakes. It was our worst match of the season.

Luis Enrique, PSG coach
The Portuguese midfielder Vitinha, despite his recent hat-trick in the Champions League, failed to stand out against Monaco’s solid midfield.

It was difficult tonight. When you play a game full of imprecision and errors, it’s impossible to win. We have to accept the level we showed today.

Luis Enrique, PSG coach
The defeat against Monaco is PSG’s third in all competitions this season and the second in November, after the loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Monaco took advantage of the counterattacks and Minamino did not forgive in the 69th minute, perfectly controlling Aleksandr Golovin’s pass and scoring against the goalkeeper. Lamine Camara, from Monaco, escaped with a yellow card after a dangerous tackle on goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Luis Enrique commented on the play, saying that Chevalier was lucky. Thilo Kehrer, Monaco defender, was sent off in the 80th minute after a video review for pushing a PSG player. Despite the defeat, PSG maintained the lead in Ligue 1, as Olympique de Marseille could not surpass them. A goal in added time from Santiago Hidalgo gave Toulouse a 2-2 draw at the Velodrome. Lens could take first place on Sunday with a win over Angers.
