Portugal crowned FIFA U-17 World Cup champions, defeating Austria

DOHA, Qatar – Portugal won the FIFA U-17 World Cup title this Thursday, after defeating Austria 1-0 in the final of a tournament that brought together 48 nations and where European teams dominated, occupying the top three places. Benfica striker Anísio Cabral managed to stay in a legal position to receive a cross and score into the empty goal in the 32nd minute. This was Cabral’s seventh goal in the tournament, leaving him just one behind the winner of the Austrian Golden Ball, Johannes Moser.

This victory represents the first U-17 title for Portugal and comes in the twentieth edition of an event that FIFA has expanded and now organizes annually, instead of every two years. Qatar hosted this edition and will also host each of the next four years. In a previous match in Doha, goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni saved two penalties and allowed Italy to beat Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout, after a goalless draw in the third-place match.
