The number 21 jersey worn by Diogo Jota in the Portugal national team will be inherited by his friend and teammate Rúben Neves, according to an announcement by coach Robert Martínez. Martínez made this announcement when presenting Portugal’s first call-up after the death of Jota, who lost his life along with his brother André Silva in a traffic accident in northern Spain on July 3rd.
The coach highlighted Jota’s importance to the team and how his legacy will continue to inspire the players. The coach added that the team will carry Jota’s spirit in their hearts and will seek to win for him, for his brother, and for all the Portuguese people. Martínez also revealed that the number of players called up will be 23 + 1, in honor of Diogo.This is the first gathering without Diogo Jota. We know what Diogo meant to each of us, the impact he had on our lives. We want to honor his memory every day.

After Jota’s death, Neves shared a moving message on Instagram.Both Martinez and Neves have expressed their determination to win the World Cup to honor Jota. Portugal will begin its path towards qualification for next year’s World Cup in North America with matches against Armenia and Hungary on September 6th and 9th, respectively. In Martínez’s call-up, the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo and João Félix stands out.I think Diogo’s absence is a sign of unity, motivation and responsibility, because Diogo wanted to win the World Cup. That’s why we are here to fight and do everything possible to achieve our dream. I can also inform that Diogo Jota’s shirt number, 21, now goes to Rúben Neves, and so he remains with all of us on the field.
