Florian Neuhaus Sanctioned for Criticism of Borussia Mönchengladbach Sporting Director

Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Florian Neuhaus has been fined and removed from the first team after being filmed in a video apparently mocking the club’s sporting director. In a video circulating on social media, Neuhaus is seen conversing with several people wearing Gladbach gear, referring to sporting director Roland Virkus. The 28-year-old player appeared to call Virkus “the worst manager in the world” and mentioned the sporting director’s role in determining his annual salary of 4 million euros. Gladbach announced a “heavy” fine for Neuhaus and his suspension from training with the first team for four weeks. According to the German newspaper Bild, the fine would amount to about 100,000 euros.

“Florian Neuhaus’ behavior and statements are detrimental to the club and unacceptable,” Gladbach CEO Stefan Stegemann stated in a statement on Thursday. “He has damaged the club with his words and has deeply disappointed the people involved, which is not compatible with the club’s values.” Neuhaus joined Gladbach in 2017 and has played more than 200 matches in all competitions with the club. However, last season he acted mainly as a substitute and only played 17 times in the league, where the team finished in tenth position.
