FIFA Pays Tribute to Diogo Jota and his Brother André Silva
FIFA paid an emotional tribute to Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, before the Club World Cup quarter-final matches in Orlando, Florida, and Philadelphia.
The Jota brothers, aged 28 and Silva, aged 25, were found dead near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, after the Lamborghini they were traveling in crashed and caught fire on a secluded road on Thursday.
In the match between Al Hilal and Fluminense at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, the players formed a circle in the center of the field while the screen displayed a photo of the Portuguese footballers. The fans participated in a moment of silence.
In Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, where Palmeiras of Brazil faced Chelsea, a black and white photo of the brothers was displayed and a moment of silence was observed, with players from both teams wearing a black armband on their sleeve.Pedro Neto, Jota’s teammate in the Portuguese national team, made the sign of the cross when entering the field with a shirt on his shoulder with the names of Jota and André Silva. Neto raised the shirt during the moment of silence with the help of Enzo Fernández.
The Spanish police are investigating the cause of the accident, which did not involve another vehicle, and they believe it may have been caused by a tire blowout.
Jota’s death occurred two weeks after he married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, during a vacation after a long season in which he helped Liverpool win the Premier League. The couple had three children, the youngest born last year.
Silva played in the Portuguese club Penafiel in the lower divisions.
