Maresca Praises Estevão and Compares Him to Cole Palmer

Coach Enzo Maresca expressed his satisfaction at managing Estêvão, highlighting his potential to follow in the footsteps of Cole Palmer at Chelsea. In an exciting match at Stamford Bridge, Estêvão, at just 18 years old, became the club’s youngest goalscorer in the Champions League. In his fifth start with Chelsea, after arriving from Palmeiras, Estêvão demonstrated an impressive performance. His performance almost culminated in a spectacular overhead kick that grazed the post.

The peculiar thing about Estêvão is that with young players you worry that they will have a good game and think they are at the top. Estêvão is polite, humble, and wants to learn. His family does a great job there. We are happy not only with his performance, but also that he is a good kid.

Maresca, who coached Palmer in the Manchester City youth system, before the English international joined Chelsea and established himself as one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League, sees similarities in the development of both players. Maresca believes that Estêvão needs more time in the Premier League, similar to Palmer’s case. In addition, he predicts that Estêvão, although currently playing on the wings, could become a more central player in the future.

I feel very fortunate to be their coach because it’s exciting, you can enjoy it. I think the fans in the end, pay for tickets to see players like Cole Palmer, like Estêvão, these types of players. So it’s good that we can have players like Estêvão, like Cole, like them.

The match against Ajax, which ended in a thrashing, saw Marc Guiu open the scoring, followed by Moisés Caicedo. Ajax scored with a penalty from Wout Weghorst, but Enzo Fernández converted another penalty for Chelsea. Estêvão also scored a penalty and Tyrique George added the fifth goal. Chelsea made history by having three teenagers on the scoresheet, and Reggie Watts became the club’s youngest player in the competition. Maresca highlighted the club’s strategy of betting on young talents, pointing out that last season they already had the youngest team in Premier League history.

I work with them every day, I know what they can do. I also know that we are going to have moments where we will suffer a little more, for sure. But I think the good thing about them is that they want to learn, they want to improve and I think that’s good.
