The world of soccer is in mourning following the tragic news of the death of Liverpool and Portugal national team striker Diogo Jota, and his brother André Silva, in a car accident near Zamora, Spain.
The news was confirmed by the Spanish Civil Guard and later by the Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, and the Portuguese Football Federation.
According to reports from the Civil Guard, the accident occurred in the early hours of Thursday. Authorities are investigating the causes of the incident, in which no other vehicles were involved.
Diogo Jota, 28 years old, leaves an immense void in football. Recently, the player married Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three children.
Since his arrival at Liverpool from Wolverhampton in 2020, Jota played 182 matches. In his career with the ‘Reds’, he won the Premier League title in May, as well as the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups.
The Portuguese footballer began his career at Paços de Ferreira, and also played for Atlético de Madrid and FC Porto.
Internationally, Jota represented Portugal 49 times, highlighting his participation in the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and last month, where he scored 14 goals.
His brother, André Silva, 25, was also a professional footballer and played for Penafiel, a club in the lower divisions of Portugal.
