Angel City FC issued a statement confirming King’s release from the hospital.
The incident occurred during an NWSL match between Angel City and Utah Royals on May 9, where King collapsed in the second half.
After being attended to in the field and transported by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the cardiac anomaly was discovered and surgery was performed. The team reported that King’s prognosis is favorable.
The match continued after the incident, which drew criticism. The league announced it would review its policies.
The NWSL Players Association also stated that the match should not have continued.
In a subsequent statement, the league regretted having allowed the match to continue, emphasizing that the health and well-being of the NWSL community are the priority.
In Saturday’s match against Bay FC, both teams honored King with jerseys bearing the message ‘SK3’.
NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman stated that measures will be taken to ensure that a similar event in the future results in the suspension of the match.
Savy King was the second overall pick in the 2024 NWSL draft and played 18 matches for expansion club Bay FC before being transferred to Angel City in February. This season, she had participated in eight matches with the team.
