Amorim Acknowledges Pressure at Manchester United

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has stated that it would be “naive” to think he could continue in the position if the team’s results do not improve. The pressure on Amorim is intense, especially before the match against Sunderland this weekend. The Portuguese coach has only managed nine victories in 33 Premier League matches since his appointment ten months ago. Amorim is aware that it will be “impossible” for co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to maintain confidence if United’s form doesn’t improve soon.

Nobody here is naive. We understand that we need results to continue the project.

The United will look to extend their unbeaten run against newly promoted teams this weekend. Their last defeat was against Watford in November 2021, a result that led the club to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Four of Amorim’s nine league wins have been against promoted teams: Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich last season, and Burnley this season. However, Sunderland poses a significant threat, having adapted well to the Premier League, accumulating 11 points in their first six matches. This is the best start for a club coming from the Championship since West Ham in 2012. Before facing Regis Le Bris’ team, Amorim faces more calls to change his 3-4-3 system, but he has insisted that he will not change to a different formation.

I am the club’s coach, a great club. And are the media going to dictate what I am going to do? It can’t be. That’s not possible to sustain.

The defeat against Sunderland would further increase the pressure on Amorim before the international break. There has been speculation about the possibility of the 40-year-old coach resigning before being fired if the poor results continue, but he claims that only the club’s management will decide his future. Amorim added that he cannot make that decision by himself, and that leaving the club would not be easy if he has not given his all to succeed.
