The South African women’s rugby team, despite having their match against France pending in the group stage of the World Cup this weekend, has already secured their place in the quarter-finals. The players have expressed their indifference regarding their opponent at this crucial stage of the tournament. After defeating Brazil and Italy in the group stage, the team has made a historic milestone by qualifying for the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time. Now, they seek to overcome France, considered statistically superior, on Sunday in Northampton.

We don’t care who we face in the quarter-finals, as the competition gets tougher as you advance.

Laurian Johannes-Haupt, assistant coach
Johannes-Haupt, assistant coach, commented on the SA Rugby website that the team will face the quarter-finals with enthusiasm, regardless of the result against France. The coach also added: “We want to play against the best, in this case we play against number four (France) and then, a week later, against the number three or five in the world. That’s what we came for.” Regarding the match against France, Johannes-Haupt revealed that tactical and personnel adjustments will be made compared to the team that defeated Italy.

We want to play against them with a specific tactic in mind, so the team will be modified accordingly.

Furthermore, the coach stated that, although they will not stray from their direct and physical approach that has proven effective, they will refresh the team after three weeks of touring. Johannes-Haupt concluded: “The good thing is that everyone is eager to demonstrate that our performances are consistent and that the great support we receive from home is justified and is a cause for celebration.”
