Scotland Secures Place in Women’s Rugby World Cup Quarterfinals

Scotland qualified for the quarter-finals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup after defeating Fiji with a score of 29-15 at the Salford Community Stadium. The Scottish team demonstrated their determination in a hard-fought match. An early try from Francesca McGhie and two from Rhona Lloyd helped Scotland take the lead with a score of 17-5 at halftime. However, a try from Manuqalo Komaitai after the break kept the match in suspense. McGhie, with his fifth try of the tournament, and an excellent individual effort from Emma Orr, which gave Scotland a bonus point, secured the victory for Bryan Easson’s team, guaranteeing their place in the top two of the group. Fiji scored a consolation try at the end of the match thanks to Karalaini Naisewa, but their elimination in the group stage was confirmed. Scotland, which had already surpassed Wales, joins Canada, the group leader, with 10 points.

Despite leading 10-0 in the first 10 minutes, Scotland faced a demanding match, with two of their four tries coming when Fiji had one player less due to a yellow card.

McGhie needed only 94 seconds to open the scoring, taking advantage of a Fijian error. The player ran towards the ball and picked it up to score a try. Fiji’s bad luck continued with the yellow card to Vika Matarugu.
Scotland capitalized on the advantage over their opponents with 14 players, with Evie Gallagher passing to Helen Nelson and Lloyd scoring in the corner in the 10th minute. Fiji improved their game, and after an advance by Nunia Daunimoala, Loraini Senivutu scored in the corner. Orr recovered a loose ball and passed it to Lloyd, who exchanged passes with Lisa Thomson before scoring a try in the 34th minute. Fiji’s intensity increased after the break, and Komaitai scored in the 51st minute. Scotland responded well, with McGhie scoring after 56 minutes. After Bitila Tawake received a yellow card, Orr scored a great individual try. Naisewa scored with five minutes remaining, and Salote Nailolo received Fiji’s third yellow card.
