Racism in Argentina: English players suffer insults in rugby match
Steve Borthwick, captured before England’s victory against Argentina on July 12. England lodged a formal complaint with World Rugby after its players were victims of racist insults from spectators during their victory over Argentina in San Juan on July 12, the governing body reported on Monday. Despite the investigation, those responsible could not be identified. The RFU (Rugby Football Union) filed the complaint on July 15, according to a World Rugby statement. An immediate investigation was launched, which included witness statements and video analysis.

While it is clear that an incident occurred, we regret that the individuals responsible could not be identified.

World Rugby President Brett Robinson condemned the incident.

We offer our full support to the players involved and want them to know that rugby is with them in opposing racism. I applaud their courage in raising what must have been a very distressing experience.

Brett Robinson, President of World Rugby
The president of the Argentine Rugby Union (UAR), Gabriel Travaglini, also condemned the incident, indicating that a “group of five or seven individuals” was responsible for the abuse. More than 20,000 spectators attended the Bicentenario Stadium, where England sealed a 2-0 victory in the two-match series.

Unfortunately, despite an exhaustive search, it was not possible to identify the perpetrators.

Gabriel Travaglini, President of the UAR
Bill Sweeney, England Rugby’s chief executive, also condemned the abuse. Each player, regardless of their origin, has the right to represent their country with pride and dignity, free from discrimination and abuse. We are in close contact with the affected players and have offered them all our support. In 2020, the UAR removed Pablo Matera’s captaincy and suspended him and two other players from Argentina’s last Tri Nations match against Australia after the flanker allegedly posted discriminatory and xenophobic messages on social media several years earlier.
