James O’Connor to lead the Wallabies in the Rugby Championship opener
Veteran James O’Connor has been selected to start the Wallabies’ match against the Springboks in the Rugby Championship. However, luck is not on the team’s side, as Ben Donaldson suffered an injury during Thursday’s training.
O’Connor, 35, will wear the number 10 jersey at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Sunday morning. This decision represents a change of strategy for coach Joe Schmidt, who had previously opted to develop new talents.
Noah Lolesio and Tom Lynagh’s injuries have forced Schmidt to reconsider his plan. Lolesio underwent neck surgery, while Lynagh suffered an injury in a match.James O’Connor is set to play in Australia’s opening Rugby Championship match against the Springboks.Initially, Schmidt was expected to select Donaldson, but ultimately opted for O’Connor’s experience. Donaldson was not included in the 23 players due to his injury.
Schmidt explained that Donaldson was injured at the end of training and that he would undergo a scan to determine the severity of the injury.
The coach is also considering options to fill the opening position, including Nic White and Andrew Kellaway.
Donaldson’s injury adds to a series of setbacks for the Wallabies, who have also seen Rob Valetini, Will Skelton and Jake Gordon suffer injuries.
O’Connor hasn’t played a match since the Super Rugby Pacific final, but his performance led to his consideration for the Wallabies selection. The veteran has been called up by coach Dave Rennie.
The challenge for O’Connor and the Wallabies is significant, as Australia hasn’t beaten the Springboks in South Africa since 2010. Schmidt expects a tough match against a strengthened South African team.
