France: Axelle Berthoumieu Cited for Alleged Bite at Women's Rugby World Cup
France defeated Ireland 18-13 on Sunday. The French national team player, Axelle Berthoumieu, has been cited by World Rugby after allegedly biting Ireland’s Aoife Wafer in the Women’s World Cup quarter-final match. Ireland captain Sam Monaghan reported the incident to the referee after Wafer reported the bite during her team’s defeat. Ireland led the score 13-0 in Exeter at the time of the alleged incident, and was heading to the semi-finals. However, France staged a spectacular comeback, winning 18-13 and securing a match against England next week. Berthoumieu could face a long suspension if found guilty.

I spoke with the referee. Aoife told me, I didn’t see it, but I spoke with the referee and asked him.

World Rugby confirmed on Sunday evening that Berthoumieu was cited for biting, while her teammate Manae Felu was cited for a dangerous tackle. The cases will be judged on Monday.
