Oilers’ Jake Walman Fined for Game 3 Incidents

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman has been fined a total of $10,000 by the NHL, following two incidents that occurred during the team’s Game 3 loss in the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. Walman received a $5,000 fine for an incident involving the Panthers’ bench. During the second period, Panthers player A.J. Greer stole Walman’s glove and placed it on the bench. Walman responded by spraying water at the Florida players with his bottle, on at least four occasions.

“Obviously I did that for a reason. I won’t go into details. It’s just a game, I guess,” Walman said after the 6-1 defeat. “I just have to realize that there are cameras everywhere and they see those things”.

The second $5,000 fine was for hitting the Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk in the third period. Walman delivered several blows to Tkachuk’s head while the Panthers player was being held by Edmonton defenseman John Klingberg. Walman received two minor penalties for roughing and a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. These fines represent the maximum allowed under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement. The money raised goes to the Emergency Assistance Fund for Players. Game 3 recorded a total of 140 penalty minutes between the Oilers and Panthers, the fourth-highest total in a Stanley Cup Final game. Center Leon Draisaitl called the third period, which included 122 combined penalty minutes, “a UFC fight” between the teams.

“It was a penalty-filled mess tonight,” said Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner. “I’m not really sure what to think. I think you can see there’s a lot of emotion involved in this. We’re trying to win a Cup. They’re trying to win a Cup. So there’s a fight.”
