Sharks Apologize for Controversial Message in Celebration of Hispanic Heritage

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Sharks issued an apology following the display of a message on the stadium screen that generated controversy during the celebration of Hispanic heritage. The message, displayed on the screen during halftime of Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh, read: “SJ SHARKS FANS/I LOVE THE ICE!!/¡LET’S GO, GUYS!”. However, the controversy arose due to the interpretation of the message, which some viewers considered to seem to praise the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a sensitive issue in the Hispanic community.

“Sharks Sports & Entertainment deeply regrets that this message, which does not align with our organization’s values, was not detected during our standard review process,” the Sharks communicated.

Sharks Statement
The team is investigating the origin of the message. This annual celebration, known as “Night of the Sharks”, marks the ninth consecutive year that the team pays tribute to Hispanic heritage.
