Sharks Apologize for Controversial Message During Hispanic Heritage Celebration
SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Sharks issued an apology after displaying a message on the stadium screen that generated controversy during the team’s Hispanic heritage celebration. The message, which appeared on the screen during halftime of Saturday night’s game against Pittsburgh, seemed to praise the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The message, from a fan, said: “SJ SHARKS FANS/LOVE FOR THE ICE!!/¡LET’S GO, GUYS!” The Sharks issued an apology later during the game, stating that “a message with offensive words, which had been sent externally, was inadvertently displayed on the stadium screen”.The Sharks organization sincerely apologizes for this oversight and is actively working to determine the origin of the message. The Sharks were celebrating their ninth annual Hispanic Heritage celebration in what they call “Night of the Sharks”.“Sharks Sports & Entertainment deeply regrets that this message, which does not align with the values of our organization, was not detected during our standard review process,” the statement continued.
