San Jose Secures Sharks’ Stay Until 2051

The San Jose City Council unanimously approved a crucial agreement on Tuesday, ensuring the renovation of the Sharks’ stadium and the team’s continuity in the city until the year 2051. This decision marks a significant milestone for the franchise and its fans. Mayor Matt Mahan and the ten council members backed the agreement, committing the city to invest $325 million in the modernization of SAP Center, a venue with a 32-year history and owned by the city. In addition, team owner Hasso Plattner will contribute an additional $100 million to the project. Plattner has already invested more than $100 million in stadium improvements over the last decade, demonstrating his commitment to infrastructure and the fan experience. The agreement includes a clause that will penalize the Sharks if they decide to leave the city before the contract expires on June 30, 2051, thus guaranteeing long-term stability. In addition, the Sharks and the city of San Jose will begin planning for the construction of a new stadium starting in September 2027, suggesting an ambitious vision for the team. The Sharks, who began their journey in 1991 and settled in their downtown San Jose arena in 1993, have been a key element in the city’s sports identity.

The Sharks are proud to have played in San José for over 30 years and look forward to another 25 more. While we have consistently invested our own funds to maintain the city-owned SAP Center, and intend to continue doing so, this partnership with the City of San José will bring much-needed renovations and improvements for arena guests, teams, and artists.
