Ovechkin Breaks the Drought and Approaches 900 Goals

The Russian star Alex Ovechkin has ended his brief goal drought. The count returned, and the legend is about to reach another historic milestone. Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season on Friday night, leaving him only two goals away from reaching 900 in his career. This goal contributed to the Washington Capitals’ victory over the Minnesota Wild with a final score of 5-1. The forward had been scoreless in the first four games of the season, an unusual period for him, surpassing his drought from last season, where he scored 44 goals and broke Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record with his 895th goal. Now, Ovechkin’s total number of goals amounts to 898, an achievement that stands out on a visible counter in the Washington stadium.

The opportunities were there. Sometimes you just have to be patient.

With the score 2-1 in favor of the Capitals in the third period, Dylan Strome won a face-off for Ovechkin, who shot the puck that went in off the left post.

Obviously, we try that play frequently, and when it works, it looks great. It doesn’t always work. It was one of those situations where it just happened.

After the defeat in their inaugural match, the Capitals have strung together four consecutive victories and have conceded only three goals in 5-on-5 situations all season. On Friday, they outshot Minnesota 45-14 in a dominant performance. After two periods, the shot difference was 24-7, but Washington only led 2-1 before Ovechkin extended the Capitals’ lead.

Everything we did in the third period was in line with how we want to play. The structure, the players made good decisions, rotating the lines. It was probably our most impressive period given the situation.
