Oilers’ Jake Walman Fined by the NHL

Edmonton Oilers defenseman Jake Walman has been fined a total of $10,000 by the NHL, following two incidents that occurred in Game 3’s loss against the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final. Walman received a $5,000 fine for an incident involving the Florida bench during the second period on Monday night. Panthers player A.J. Greer stole Walman’s glove and placed it on the bench. Walman’s response was to take his water bottle and spray the Florida players, at least four times, from his own bench.

“Yes, obviously I did that for a reason. I won’t go into details. It’s just a game, I guess,” Walman said after the 6-1 defeat to Florida, which gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the series. “I just have to realize that there are cameras everywhere and they see those things”.

Walman was also fined $5,000 for assaulting Florida’s Matthew Tkachuk in the third period. He delivered several blows to Tkachuk’s head with his glove, while the Panthers player’s arms were being held by Edmonton defenseman John Klingberg. Walman received two minor penalties for roughing and a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. The fines imposed were the maximum allowed under the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement. The money goes to the Emergency Assistance Fund for Players. The Oilers and Panthers accumulated a total of 140 penalty minutes in Game 3, the fourth-highest figure in a Stanley Cup Final game. Center Leon Draisaitl called their third period, which featured a combined 122 penalty minutes, “a UFC fight” between the teams.

“It was a penalty-filled night,” said Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner. “I’m not really sure what to think. I think you see there’s a lot of emotion involved. We’re trying to win a Cup. They’re trying to win a Cup. So there’s a fight.”
