NHL Cancels Olympic Event and Bets on the All-Star Weekend in 2027
The NHL has made a strategic decision that directly impacts its plans for the coming years. According to reports, the league has canceled the Olympic farewell event scheduled for February at UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders.
Instead of this event, the NHL plans to hold the All-Star Weekend in the same location, but in the year 2027. This decision reflects a change in the league’s strategy, seeking to maximize the impact of its main events.
The news was reported by Emily Kaplan. UBS Arena was originally going to host the All-Star Weekend in 2026, an initiative that sought to serve as a starting point for players, coaches, and staff to gather before traveling to Milan.
The success of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, held earlier this year, influenced the league’s decision. The directors considered the possibility of rethinking the traditional All-Star Weekend format, which includes skills competitions and a 3-on-3 game or tournament.
NHL officials had indicated that the Islanders would likely host the All-Star Game in the odd-numbered year between the return to the Olympic Games and the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. The intention is to use the weekend of February 5-7, 2027 for this event.
