John Hayden and the Kraken Mascot Had a Close Encounter with a Bear in Alaska

Seattle Kraken player John Hayden and the team mascot, Buoy, experienced a moment of tension during the filming of a promotional video in Alaska. The incident occurred while they were on a fly fishing excursion in Katmai National Park. In the video shared by the team, the bear is seen approaching Buoy, who was in the water with Hayden and the film crew. Fortunately, the bear veered off before making contact, and everyone was able to return to the shore.

I wanted to blame Buoy. They were very interested in his appearance.

The Katmai National Park is known for its brown bears, which often feed on salmon in the Brooks River. The NHL hockey team clarified that they did not intend to include the bear in the filming, but decided to share the video on social media. According to Melissa O’Brochta, Director of Marketing Partnerships for the Kraken, the bears are accustomed to human presence in the area and were not frightened. The meeting took place on June 25th, during an annual trip organized by the Bristol Bay Native Corporation in Anchorage, Alaska, which aims to promote youth ice hockey. Alaska does not have its own NHL team; the closest teams are in Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.
