Kaepernick and Lynch Join the Fight for Diversity in Hockey
Former NFL players Colin Kaepernick and Marshawn Lynch are focusing their efforts on promoting diversity and inclusion in the world of hockey.
Both athletes will collaborate with members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA) in organizing a street hockey tournament for young people from marginalized communities in Toronto. The event will take place on August 16th.
The HDA, composed of current and retired NHL players belonging to minorities, aims to eradicate racism in hockey and make this sport more accessible and inclusive for young people who may not have the resources to practice it.
This tournament, announced as the world’s largest for young BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), will be free for the 250 young participants.
The tournament expands on the work the HDA has done, offering sports and educational programs on and off the ice throughout the year, benefiting 1,500 young people enrolled in the Toronto area.
Among the members of the HDA are Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Dumba. The alliance is chaired by Akim Aliu, a former minor league player.
