Kaepernick and Lynch Promote Diversity in Hockey

Former NFL players Colin Kaepernick and Marshawn Lynch are focusing their efforts on promoting diversity and inclusion in ice hockey. Both will join members of the Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA) to host a street hockey tournament for marginalized youth in Toronto on August 16, the alliance announced on Thursday. The HDA is composed of current and former NHL players of color, with the aim of eradicating racism in hockey and making the sport more inclusive and accessible for young people who may not be able to afford it. This event, billed as the world’s largest BIPOC youth street hockey tournament, will be free for the 250 young people who will participate. The tournament expands on the work that the HDA has done by offering sports and educational programming throughout the year, both on and off the ice, for 1,500 young players registered in the Toronto area. Among the members of the HDA are Calgary Flames forward Nazem Kadri and Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Dumba. The alliance is chaired by Akim Aliu, a former minor league player.
