NHL Cancels Olympic Event and Bets on the All-Star Weekend in 2027
The NHL has decided to cancel the Olympic farewell event scheduled for February at UBS Arena, home of the New York Islanders. Instead, the league plans to hold the All-Star Weekend festivities at the same arena in 2027.
The news, initially reported, reveals a strategic change in the league’s schedule. The Islanders’ arena, originally designated for the 2026 All-Star Weekend, will now host the event in 2027.
The decision comes after the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, which led executives to reconsider the traditional All-Star Weekend format. The league is evaluating options to innovate the event, including the possibility of a 3-on-3 tournament, which has become a key element in the mid-season of hockey.
NHL officials had anticipated that the Islanders would host the All-Star Game in the odd year between the return to the Olympics and the 2028 World Cup of Hockey. The league is looking to take advantage of the weekend of February 5-7, 2027 for this event.
