Alexander Romanov secures his future with the Islanders

The New York Islanders have secured the continuity of defenseman Alexander Romanov by signing an eight-year contract extension, the team announced this Monday.

Although the financial details have not been officially disclosed, it is estimated that the agreement has an average annual value of $6.25 million, totaling $50 million.

Romanov, selected in the second round of the 2018 NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens, proved his worth last season with 20 points, distributed in four goals and 16 assists, as well as a plus-5 rating in 64 games.

The defenseman has a total of 83 points in 354 regular season games, the result of 17 goals and 66 assists, between his time with the Canadiens (2020-22) and the Islanders.

The Islanders’ decision to secure Romanov comes after the recent trade of Noah Dobson to the Canadiens, reinforcing the importance of maintaining the team’s defensive solidity.

In addition, the Islanders have added defenseman Matthew Schaefer to their ranks, selected with the first draft pick.
