NEW YORK – New York Islanders forward Jonathan Drouin has been suspended for one game due to an elbow to the head of Pittsburgh’s Connor Dewar late in Thursday night’s game.

The NHL’s Player Safety Department announced the sanction on Friday after a disciplinary hearing to review the play.

Drouin, 30, received a five-minute major penalty and was ejected for misconduct for the hit in a post-whistle fight with 15 seconds remaining, which sent Dewar to the ice on Thursday night.

This is Drouin’s first suspension in his career in the league. He will miss the Islanders’ home opener on Saturday night against Washington. He will lose $20,833 in salary, and the money will go to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
