The Hughes Brothers Secure Their Future with Million-Dollar Contracts in the NHL

In the world of ice hockey, the Hughes family continues to make its mark. Luke Hughes, defenseman for the New Jersey Devils, has signed a contract extension for seven years and $63 million. This agreement unites him with his star brother, Jack Hughes, solidifying their presence on the team. The news of Luke Hughes’ signing came on Wednesday, and the player rejoined training camp on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for the Devils.

I think the three of us would love to play together someday. I don’t know if it will happen or not. We’ll see,” Luke said on Thursday. “But I know he loves Vancouver and he’s the captain there. We love being here. You never know. Never say never.”

With this new contract, Luke and Jack Hughes will be tied to the Devils until 2030. Luke’s deal has an annual impact of 9 million dollars. At 22 years old, Luke is entering his fourth season in the NHL, with 93 points in 155 games and two assists in four playoff games. Luke’s signing came after a period of contract negotiations with the Devils, during which he received advice from his brother Quinn Hughes, star defenseman for the Vancouver Canucks. Quinn, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season, advised Luke to remain patient and get what he wanted. Jack Hughes, for his part, commented that he didn’t have much advice for his brother, as he had never experienced a similar situation. He emphasized the importance of Luke getting an agreement that he felt comfortable with. Luke’s preparation for this season was interrupted by shoulder surgery in May. Devils coach Sheldon Keefe is considering this factor when reintegrating him into the lineup. Luke has been working to get in shape, skating five times a week. On his first day back at training camp, Luke participated in two consecutive practice sessions to make up for lost time. Coach Keefe expects Luke to be ready for the regular season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on October 9th.
