Marc-Andre Fleury Returns to Pittsburgh for an Exhibition Game
Legendary goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who announced his official retirement last spring after a distinguished 21-year NHL career, has signed a professional tryout contract with the Penguins. Fleury, 40 years old, will wear the team uniform in the exhibition game against Columbus on September 27. Fleury was the Penguins’ first overall pick in the 2003 NHL draft. He spent the first 13 seasons of his career in Pittsburgh, where he helped Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang win three Stanley Cups. Fleury left the Penguins when he was selected by Vegas during the expansion draft shortly after Pittsburgh won the second of two consecutive championships in 2017.Fleury, affectionately known as “Flower”, was incredibly popular among his teammates and fans. He ranks second all-time in NHL history in wins (575) and won the Vezina Trophy in 2021 while playing for Vegas. He is best known for his long career in Pittsburgh. Fleury holds almost all of the important goaltending records in Penguins history, including games played (691), wins (375), and shutouts (44).“Marc means a lot to our team, our fans, and the city of Pittsburgh because of the person he is and the example he set,” said Pittsburgh general manager Kyle Dubas in a statement. “The Penguins feel that he and his family deserve this opportunity to celebrate this full-circle moment where it all began in front of the black and gold faithful.”
