Ovechkin and the Capitals: Rumors about his future

The Washington Capitals issued a statement on Thursday, clarifying Alex Ovechkin’s contract situation. The statement came after an email was sent to season ticket holders, suggesting that the upcoming season would be the legendary player’s last in the NHL.

The team reported through its social media that the email was sent by mistake by a member of the corporate sales department.

Ovechkin, who recently surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s record for career goals scored, totaling 897, is under contract until the 2025-26 season. The player will turn 40 in September.

Ovechkin himself has expressed his intention to play next season, which would mark his twenty-first season in the league.

Last season, Ovechkin demonstrated his resilience by recovering from a leg fracture and scoring 44 goals, ranking as the third-highest goal scorer in the league.

Ovechkin led his team with five goals in ten games during the postseason, but only scored one goal in the second round. The Capitals failed to advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the fifteenth time in sixteen appearances during Ovechkin’s career. The only appearance in the Eastern Conference final was part of the successful 2018 season, when Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.
