Lane Hutson Wins the Calder Trophy
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson has been awarded the prestigious Calder Memorial Trophy. This recognition is given annually to the most outstanding player in their first year in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Hutson, with an outstanding performance, took the prize after a vote by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association.
The trophy is awarded annually “to the player selected as the most efficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League.”

Hutson received a total of 165 first-place votes out of a possible 191, accumulating 1,832 points. He widely surpassed Dustin Wolf, goaltender for the Calgary Flames, and Macklin Celebrini, center for the San Jose Sharks, who obtained 1,169 and 1,104 points respectively.
The 21-year-old player received the trophy in a surprise celebration organized by his family, in honor of his nomination as a finalist.
Hutson led all rookies with 66 points. In addition, his 60 assists tied the NHL record for a rookie defenseman, shared with Larry Murphy.
Celebrini, 18 years old, participated in 70 games and scored 25 goals, ranking second among rookies, behind Matvei Michkov of the Philadelphia Flyers. His 63 points placed him in second place, tied with Michkov.
For his part, Wolf, 24, had a record of 29-16-8 with a goals-against average of 2.64, a save percentage of .910 and three shutouts for the Flames, who selected him in the seventh round of the 2019 draft.
