The veteran ice hockey player, Nicklas Backstrom, resumes his professional career in his home country, Sweden. After missing last season in the NHL due to a persistent hip injury, Backstrom joins the Swedish team Brynas IF. The announcement was made on Monday, confirming Backstrom’s signing for next season. The 37-year-old center’s contract with the Washington Capitals ended this summer.
Backstrom underwent hip replacement surgery in June 2022, hoping to fix a chronic problem. By September 2023, during training camp, he assured he felt “much better.” His last official match was on October 29, 2023, and on November 1, he announced a leave due to an “ongoing injury situation,” according to the team. Before his absence, Backstrom played in more than 1,200 games with the Capitals, accumulating more than 1,100 points. He was a key piece in the 2018 Stanley Cup victory. The Capitals issued a statement thanking Backstrom and wishing him the best for the future, highlighting his daily dedication to the team.I have always felt that I would like to represent Brynas again someday if the opportunity arose. After undergoing rehabilitation and being away from the game for almost two seasons, I feel very motivated and full of energy to contribute to the club’s future successes.
