The prominent hockey player, Nicklas Backstrom, resumes his professional career in his home country, Sweden, joining the Brynas IF team. This decision comes after missing the entire last NHL season due to a persistent hip injury. The official announcement from the Swedish club confirmed the signing of Backstrom for next season. The center, 37 years old, finished his contract with the Washington Capitals this summer.
Backstrom underwent hip reconstruction surgery in June 2022, hoping to fix a chronic problem. By September 2023, during training camp, he claimed to feel “much better.” His last official game was on October 29, 2023, and on November 1, he announced his absence due to what the team described as an “ongoing injury situation.” Previously, Backstrom played in more than 1,200 games with the Capitals, accumulating more than 1,100 points and contributing to the Stanley Cup victory in 2018. The Capitals expressed their gratitude to Backstrom and wished him the best in the future, highlighting his daily dedication.“I have always wanted to represent Brynas again if the opportunity arose,” Backstrom stated upon returning to the organization where he began his career. “After undergoing rehabilitation and being away from the game for almost two seasons, I feel very motivated and full of energy to contribute to the future success of the club.”
