Adam Mair, Sabres Player Development Coach, on Administrative Leave After Arrest
BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres have placed player development coach Adam Mair on administrative leave. The decision comes after reports of the former NHL player’s arrest for driving under the influence, with three children in his vehicle, last week.
The Sabres organization has not offered further comment, limiting itself to confirming that it is aware of the situation.
According to reports from WGRZ-TV Buffalo, based on court records, Mair was arrested in the suburbs of Rochester, New York, on September 4, after rear-ending another vehicle. Mair, 46, faces charges for three felonies and three misdemeanors, including aggravated driving while intoxicated with a minor in the vehicle and endangering the welfare of a child.
A person from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a police report involving Mair was filed on that date, but declined to reveal its contents.
No response was received to a message left for Mair’s attorney, Stephen Sercu.
WGRZ reported that an officer wrote in the police report that he could smell a strong odor of alcohol on Mair’s breath and that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.
Agents indicated that Mair did not pass sobriety tests at the scene and initially refused to take a chemical breathalyzer test after being transported to the police station. Subsequently, Mair changed his mind and took the test, with a result of 0.2% blood alcohol content, more than double the legal limit of 0.08%.
Originally from Hamilton, Ontario, Mair had an 11-season career in the NHL, including seven seasons with the Sabres. He retired after playing in the minor leagues in 2011-12 and was hired by the Sabres as a development coach in 2015.
Your administrative license comes just as Buffalo began hosting a five-day prospect tournament involving four other NHL teams. The Sabres are scheduled to open their training camp next week.
