Tennessee Titans Fire Brian Callahan

The Tennessee Titans have made the decision to fire their coach Brian Callahan, after only six games in his second season leading the team. Callahan leaves the team with a 4-19 record as the Titans’ coach, including a 1-5 in the current season, with Cam Ward, the first overall pick of 2025, as the starting quarterback.

After extensive conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan this morning to inform him that we are making a change at the head coach position. These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character. We are grateful for Brian’s investment in the Titans and the Tennessee community during his time as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.

Mike McCoy, senior offensive assistant, will take over as interim coach, the team announced. McCoy previously was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 to 2016. In Callahan’s first season, the Titans had a 3-14 record, which earned them the first overall pick, with which they selected Ward. With Callahan’s firing, four of the last four quarterbacks drafted as number 1 and six of the last eight have seen their head coaches fired during their rookie seasons. The Titans’ offense has scored just 83 points in six games this season, the fewest for the franchise since 1985. Frustration became evident in Week 3 at Nissan Stadium during the 41-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Fans booed the Titans and chanted “Fire Callahan” at various points in the game. Callahan handed over play-calling duties to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree last month. Callahan’s situation worsened after a 26-0 loss to the Houston Texans in Week 4. The Titans failed to reach the red zone, and Ward expressed his frustration after the game. Callahan secured his first win of the season last week, with a 22-21 victory over the Cardinals, in which Arizona squandered a 21-3 lead. However, a frustrating 20-10 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday sealed their fate. It was the Titans’ fourth loss by at least 10 points this season, the most for any team. The Titans hired Callahan in 2023 after controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk fired former coach Mike Vrabel.
