C.J. Gardner-Johnson Suffers Injury in Texans Training

The Houston Texans’ preseason was marred by a concerning injury suffered by safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson during a practice in West Virginia.

The incident occurred while Gardner-Johnson was making a tackle on wide receiver John Metchie III. After the contact, Gardner-Johnson fell to the ground, showing obvious signs of pain and unable to move his right leg.

The medical staff quickly attended to the player and helped him off the field on a cart, evidencing the seriousness of the situation.

The Texans acquired Gardner-Johnson in March through a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, seeking to strengthen their defense. The safety was expected to replace Eric Murray, who joined the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This injury could represent a hard blow for the Texans’ secondary, which has key players like Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, Calen Bullock, and Jalen Pitre.

The incorporation of Gardner-Johnson, known for his ability to intercept the ball, sought to further elevate the performance of a defense that already stood out in the league.

Given the possible absence of Gardner-Johnson, the Texans could turn to M.J. Stewart or Russ Yeast to cover his position. Jalen Pitre, with experience at the safety position, could also be an option.

Jimmie Ward, currently on the injured list and with pending legal matters, is another variable to consider.

Ward was arrested in June in Montgomery County, Texas, on charges of domestic violence. The NFL is reviewing the case to determine possible disciplinary actions.
