The Seattle Seahawks’ training camp began this Wednesday without any issues related to contracts or notable absences. However, the situation of one of their key defensive players generates uncertainty.
Nwosu, doubtful for the start of the season
Coach Mike Macdonald informed the media that outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu would not be ready to practice soon. Nwosu began camp on the physically unable to perform list, recovering from offseason knee surgery.Macdonald suggested that Nwosu could be out of action even for Week 1. At 28 years old, Nwosu has dealt with injuries, including a pectoral tear in 2023 and sprains in the medial collateral ligament and a quadriceps strain in 2024, which limited him to six games in each of the last two seasons. This happened after recording 9.5 sacks, the most in his career, in 2022, his first year in Seattle after arriving as a free agent from the Los Angeles Chargers. Nwosu underwent knee surgery shortly after the end of last season, and the team has not given a definitive date for his return to the field. In the preseason, Nwosu agreed to a restructuring of his contract that reduced his compensation for 2025 by almost $7 million. The Seahawks added defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence in March and are presumed to still be looking for an edge defender, given Nwosu’s situation. Macdonald also revealed that veteran nose tackle Johnathan Hankins starts camp on the injured list with a back issue. We’ll see. We’re entering the season probably throughout the rest of camp and then we’ll see, but I think we’ll stick to the schedule at this point. But we’re not necessarily close at this point.

Running back Ken Walker III, who had issues in spring training due to an ankle injury, practiced on Wednesday without apparent restrictions. In the long run, I think he’ll be fine, but he’s working on it. Hank is a veteran. He’s a 12-year player. We’re taking our time, so we’re not in a rush.

It looks great. He’s in a great mental space. It’s incredible to see him doing all the things we want him to do from the start. I know he’s very excited about what’s happening. Great first day with Ken.
