Saints Define Their Starting Quarterback in Days

The New Orleans Saints are preparing to announce their starting quarterback “in the coming days,” according to coach Kellen Moore announced on Saturday. The competition appears to have narrowed to Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, after an initial phase that also included Jake Haener. The coach and his technical team will review the video of the 28-19 defeat against the Denver Broncos, and then they will discuss who will lead the attack.

“It’s important that we collaborate and talk about this. Everyone has different perspectives and experiences, and that is very important,” Moore stated.

Moore added that the final decision will be a challenge, given the effort of all the players. Regarding whether all the coaches agree with the choice, Moore mentioned “healthy discussions”. The coach ruled out the possibility of signing an external veteran for the position.

“We trust this group. We have invested a lot in these players. They are young and will continue to grow every day, and we are excited to see where this goes for all of them,” Moore stated.

Rattler was the starting quarterback in the last preseason game, completing 5 of 8 passes for 43 yards in three offensive series, with no touchdowns or interceptions. Shough went into the second quarter, completing 10 of 12 passes for 102 yards and running for an 11-yard touchdown in five offensive series. He suffered a fumble due to a sack. In the three preseason games, Rattler completed 69.8% of his passes for 295 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, and was sacked four times. Shough completed 66.7% of his passes for 333 yards, with one touchdown, one rushing touchdown, one interception, and was sacked five times. Shough expressed his confidence in having demonstrated enough to win the position.

“I feel like I’ve shown consistent growth. I think it’s enough. I feel fully capable of leading,” Shough said.

Rattler, for his part, remains focused on giving his best, without thinking too much about the pending decision, but declares himself ready for the opportunity if chosen. The Saints will start the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals on September 7th.
